Before taking any steps for your newer blog, it is better to understand the factors that affect your site’s ranking.  You are not alone, most of us start making the backlink for their website to rank on Google. They do only two things, (1) Write Posts and (2) Create Backlinks. However, site’s ranking is not limited to regular posting and backlinks. There are other factors those are responsible for getting higher rankings in Google SERPS.

So, in this post, I am covering all the key Google Ranking Factors that you need to know. Let’s start,

ON PAGE RANKING FACTORS

  • Domain age
  • Keyword in URL
  • Country TLD of domain
  • Keyword in Title and Meta description
  • Keyword in H1, H2, and H3 tags
  • Keyword Density, Keyword Word Order, and LSI.
  • Quality and Length of the content
  • Outbound Link Quality and Broken Links
  • Breadcrumb Navigation
  • Web page speed and Image Optimization

OFF PAGE RANKING FACTORS

  • Backlinks ( No. of linking root domains )
  • Backlinks from .edu and .gov domains
  • Backlink age
  • Authority of linking domain
  • The diversity of links
  • Relevancy
  • Support for Schema.org Microformats
  • Listed in DMOZ
  • Social signals and authority of social accounts
  • IP Address of Server

According to Matt Cutts, domain age is not much important, but still, it is a ranking factor. You can’t do anything here.

TIP: Keep calm and wait.

Keyword in URL and URL’s length:

Having keyword in post URL increases relevancy and boosts website’s ranking.

TIP: Optimize your post’s permalink before publishing. But try to keep your URL shorter in length.

Country TLD of the domain:

Country TLD of a domain like ( .us, .uk, .pk, .in etc ) helps to rank the website for that specific country. For example, Example.in will get an extra boost in India than Example.com. But country TLD is limited to that country only and will not help to rank globally.

TIP: It would be smart decision If you are starting your business for a particular country. Don’t go for Country TLD if you are starting your business globally.

Keyword in Title and Meta Description:

Having related keyword in post’s meta title and meta description gives an additional ranking signal.

TIP: Try to optimize your post’s meta title before publishing it. Don’t over optimize it.

Keyword in H1, H2, and H3 tags:

Having keywords in H1 tags is another strong ranking signal. You may consider H1 tags as another post title. Having keywords in H2, H3, and H4 as subheadings helps to increase relevancy and gives a little boost.

TIP: Most of the themes on WordPress uses post title as H1 tags, so you don’t need to play with H1 tags. Consider using rest of the tags ( H2, H3, and H4 ) to extend content’s quality. Use it wisely, Don’t over optimize it.

Keyword Density, Keyword Word Order, and LSI:

Keyword density is still something that is used by Google to determine the topic of a web page. Having an exact matching keyword in a page’s content will rank better than the same keyword in a different order.

LSI ( Latent Semantic Indexing ) is high Google ranking factor.

TIP: Maintain your focus keyword density, don’t over optimize. Do keyword research before writing any post and insert LSI keyword within the post.

Quality and Lenght of Content:

Quality content that is written in-depth gets an extra boost in ranking than low-quality content.

TIP: Always write quality content with full details in it. Don’t use an article spinner. Avoid grammatical errors. Quality means quality, not copy/paste.

Outbound Link Quality and Broken Links:

Linking your content to related authority sites helps in sending trust signals to Google. If your website has too many broken links, then you may lose your overall ranking, and Google may start neglecting your site.

TIP: Whenever you write a new post then try to link to high-quality authority sites as reference. Check your inbound and outbound links time to time to avoid broken link penalty.

Breadcrumb Navigation:

A breadcrumb is a secondary navigation element in websites which helps users and search-engine bots to know where they are. See below screenshot the breadcrumb navigation is marked with the red box.

TIP: Many WordPress themes have built-in breadcrumb support. WordPres SEO plugin Yoast also supports breadcrumbs. For more information contact their support or only search on Gooogle.

Web page speed and Image Optimization:

Loading speed of a website is an important ranking factor. The web pages with clean HTML codes and optimized images loads faster than a poorly coded website with unoptimized images.

TIP: Host your website with a good hosting company. Try to avoid PNGs and GIFs as they are always larger in size. You can give a try to WEBP format images developed by Google. WEBP images are smaller than PNG, GIF and JPEG images without any loss in image quality.

Backlinks ( No. of linking root domains ):

One backlink from thousand domain is better than thousand backlinks from a single domain.

TIP: Try to increase your referring domains. If you are using forums for backlinking, then try to be active there. Create each backlink manually without using any software. Never spam, avoid black hat.

Backlinks from.Edu and.Gov domains:

.Edu and.Gov TLD’s have significant value in Google ranking algorithm. Link juice from these domains boosts the overall ranking of a website in Google SERPS. This is an important ranking factor.

TIP: Find .edu or .gov blogs which are relevant to your content. Write an article with detailed information for these domains and ask for a backlink. Do it carefully.

Backlink Age:

Backlink from old domains is stronger than links from newer domains.

TIP: Keep calm and wait.

Authority of linking domain:

Backlink from high authority domain plays in important role in overall ranking. Backlink from DA 60 has more value than a link from DA 10 website. This is also an important ranking factor.

TIP: Try to get backlinks from high DA websites.

The Diversity of Links:

As I already told you, 1000 links from thousand different domains have more value than 1000 links from a single domain. Having a large number of links from a single domain is a sign of web spam which can hurt your overall ranking.

TIP: Be natural while commenting on blogs and creating profiles in forums. Avoid spam.

Relevancy:

Outbound links to related websites and backlinks from related sites increase relevancy signals. Same for WordPress tags, categories, keywords in meta title, description, and post permalinks.

TIP: Always link to sites those are related to your topic. Always use topic related tags, do a post on related categories and optimize your meta title, description, and permalinks for relevant keywords.

Support for Schema.org Microformats:

Those web pages which support schema.org microformats gets a direct boost in overall ranking and have high CTR than sites not having schema.org microformat support.

TIP: You can implement schema.org microformats support for your blog by using “WP SEO Structured Data Schema” or ” All in one Schema.org” Plugin in WordPress.

Listed in DMOZ:

Most of the people believe that Google gives new trust to DMOZ listed site.

TIP: To get your website listed on DMOZ web directory you have to follow this link.

Social Signals and Authority of Social Accounts:

Facebook shares and likes, Twitter tweets, pins from Pinterest, stumbles from StumbleUpon, upvotes from Reddit and no. of Google+ votes indirectly boosts site’s ranking and traffic. It is believed that social signals from authoritative accounts have more value than accounts having fewer followers, likers, karmas, etc.

TIP: Don’t try to fool Google by spamming social media. Spamming social media means using fake accounts to create false social signals.

IP Address of Server:

If IP address of your server is flagged as spam, then it will hurt the overall ranking of all sites on that IP host.

TIP: Avoid shared hosting. Go for VPS or Dedicated servers. Avoid spam.

Hey there would you mind letting me know which web
host you’re utilizing? I’ve loaded your blog in 3 completely different browsers and I must say this blog loads a lot faster then most.

Can you recommend a good web hosting provider at a fair price?
Thanks, I appreciate it!

Hi Jim, sorry for my late reply. I was busy. I’m still working to make it faster. If you want to make your site load faster, then don’t go for shared hosting. I’ll recommend unmanaged VPS. Here, at GenUpdates, I’m using DigitalOcean’s 5$ plan. I did everything according to my choice and needs. I have done many mistakes but also I learned a lot & Still learning…
Thanks for asking.
